Air India Express carrying 190 passengers and crew skids off runway at Kozhikode airport; pilot and 16 others dead

An Air India Express flight with passengers on board en route from Dubai skidded off the runway while landing, in Kozhikode, Friday, August 7,2020.

At least 17 persons, including the pilot and co-pilot were killed when a Dubai -Calicut Air India Express aircraft carrying 190 passengers and crew skidded off the runway at Kerala’s Kozhikode airport and fell into a 35-feet valley before splitting into two pieces late Friday evening.

The incident took place at around 7.40 pm amid heavy rainfall in the area. The flight XS 1344 from Dubai was part of the Vande Bharat Mission, meant to bring home stranded people across the globe amid Covid -19 pandemic. Several passengers have been injured and rushed to a medical facility.

Reacting to the accident, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, ” I have instructed the police and the fireforce to take urgent actions in the wake of the plane crash at Kozhikode International Airport (CCJ) in Karipur. “

TThe Director -General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that “aircraft skidded off the runway, crashed into a wall and then fell into a wall and then fell into a valley, splitting into two. ”

The airline said that “Air India Express flight IX 1344 was a B -737 aircraft. There were 174 passengers, 10 infants, two pilots, and five cabin crew in board. There was no fire reported at the time of landing. “
