PAATAL-LOK

“When a man loves a dog, he is a good man. When a dog loves a man, he’s a good man”
The above dialogue which gained popularity within a few days of the release, signifies how subtle yet convincing the premise of this series is.
A lucid classification of the world into the three regions given by Inspector Hathi Ram Chaudhary heralds the first episode of Paatal lok, an intense, nail-biting raw crime thriller.
Inspector Hathi Ram Chaudhary explains the above theory to his subordinate Ansari, who is willing to join IPS. Being disgraced by his son as well as his seniors, Hathi Ram yearns for an opportunity to hike his career. Soon, his fate discerns one such benefaction for him when he is handed over the case of a failed assassination of a prominent journalist of the nation- Sanjeev Mehra. The four prospective killers are caught by the DCP and his team. Hathi Ram is ordained to investigate the case He will cross all boundries to unravel the mystery.
Spanning over 9 episodes of approximately 45 mintues each, produced by Anushka Sharma, the series explores the racism and double standards that persist in various regions of the nation. It also exudes how inherent and heinous is the influence of politicians and their upper-caste ideologies. Pirouetted around bloodshed, discrimination against minorities, each episode keeps you engrossed with a brilliant story and stupendous performance by a bunch of great actors like Jaydeep Ahlawat, Abhishek Banerjee, Ishwak Singh and others.
Though the nefarious killer Hathoda Tyagi (essayed by Abhishek Banerjee) gets a limited on screen appearance, he throws a bang on screen performance, in fact, a great one to be cherished for long. Well written dialogue and the prolific acting by Jaydeep Ahlawat, Ishwak Singh and others is ostentatious.
Despite all such accomplishments as a spine chilling thriller, the story seems protracted after a certain time. Also, it ends on a note that seems a tad convoluted and a little impenetrable. This might be an allusion of a second season.
Overall, it is a enchanting and exciting series and doesn’t disappoint much. It has been appreciated by the critcs and accorded with a rating of 7.5 on IMDb. Anurag Kashyap tweeted about Paatal lok, being the best crime thriller to come out of this country. A series adorned with so many positive feedbacks is definitely worth the watch.
